Hwaseong Fortress
Hwaseong Temporary Palace
Located in Suwon, Hwaseong Fortress was constructed between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. Built to honor and protect the tomb of King Jeongjo’s father, Crown Prince Sado, the fortress features several impressive gates, including the Hwaseong Temporary Palace and the iconic Janganmun Gate. In recognition of its historical significance and architectural brilliance, Hwaseong Fortress was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Hwahongmun Gate
Hwahongmun Gate is the northern gateway of Hwaseong Fortress and one of two gates designed to regulate the flow of water from the Suwon Stream that runs through the fortress. The gate features seven arched openings of varying sizes, with the central arch being the largest. This design not only serves a practical purpose but also adds to the architectural beauty of the fortress.
Hwaseong Fortress Wall
The Hwaseong Fortress wall stretches 5.74 kilometers in length and encompasses an area of 130 hectares, gracefully following the topography of the Suwon region. The wall is equipped with numerous defensive features, including floodgates, observation towers, command posts, and various bastions for firearms and archers. These elements not only enhance the fortress’s defensive capabilities but also reflect the ingenuity of its design.
Korean Folk Village
